How federal tax brackets work
The US uses a progressive tax system. You pay the lowest rate (10%) on the first portion of your taxable income, a slightly higher rate on the next portion, and so on. Only the income that falls into a given bracket is taxed at that rate.
For example, a single filer earning $75,000 in 2024 does not pay 22% on all of their income. They pay 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on the next $35,550, and 22% on the remainder above $47,150 (after subtracting the $14,600 standard deduction). Their effective tax rate works out to around 13%, well below the 22% marginal rate.

Frequently asked questions
What is a marginal tax rate?
Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to the last dollar of your taxable income - the highest bracket you reach. For example, if you are single and earn $60,000, your marginal rate is 22%, but only the income above $47,150 (after the standard deduction) is taxed at that rate.
What is an effective tax rate?
Your effective tax rate is the average rate you pay across all your taxable income - total estimated federal tax divided by taxable income. It is always lower than your marginal rate because the lower portions of your income are taxed at lower rates.
How do tax brackets work in the US?
The US uses a progressive tax system. Income is taxed in layers: the first dollars at the lowest rate, income above each threshold at a higher rate, and so on. You pay the lower rates on the lower portions of income regardless of your total earnings.
What are the 2024 federal tax brackets for single filers?
For 2024, single filers pay: 10% on income up to $11,600; 12% on $11,601 to $47,150; 22% on $47,151 to $100,525; 24% on $100,526 to $191,950; 32% on $191,951 to $243,725; 35% on $243,726 to $609,350; and 37% on income above $609,350. The standard deduction of $14,600 is subtracted first.
